Te mapa
Gitesi lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the steep, green hills that rise east of Lake Kivu. Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and the map here shows why. Roads keep to the ridges and wind around the slopes. Settlements string out along them instead of clustering into dense blocks.
This part of the country is made up of intensively farmed hillsides, with small plots running down towards valley bottoms. The lake lies not far to the west, and the region's main roads connect the hill communities to the lakeshore towns and further on towards the rest of the country.
A Gitesi map poster is a study of terrain in line form. Curving roads trace the high ground, smaller tracks drop into the valleys, and the pattern of settlement reflects centuries of farming in steep country. It is a map that reveals the shape of the land as much as the shape of the place.
Main roads follow the crests of the hills in long, curving lines, the most practical routes through landscape where valleys are steep and often wet.
Rather than forming a single dense centre, homes and small clusters spread across the hillsides, giving the map an even, dispersed texture.
The land falls westwards towards the lake, and the road network gradually orients itself towards the lakeshore and its towns.
