Đại Lộc lies inland from Da Nang, in the valley of the Vu Gia river, which flows out of the mountains toward the coast. The district town sits on the lowland near the river, and from above the landscape is a mix of rice fields, village hamlets and the broad, braided course of the water.
The river is the dominant feature. It spreads across a wide bed with sandbars and channels, and roads and bridges cross it to link communities on both banks. To the west and south the land rises into green hills and mountains, giving the map a clear contrast between plain and upland.
