Te mapa
Goli otok, whose name means barren island, lies in the northern Adriatic between the island of Rab and the mainland coast below the Velebit mountains. It is small and low, and its surface is almost entirely bare rock. It is exposed to the cold bora wind, which sweeps down from the mountains and strips away soil and vegetation. No one lives there today.
The island's history gives its outline weight. From 1949 it held a Yugoslav prison camp for political prisoners, at first people accused of siding with the Soviet Union after the split between Tito and Stalin, and it remained a prison until the late 1980s. The abandoned buildings still stand near the shore, and tour boats now bring visitors from Rab.
On paper, Goli otok is little more than a compact coastline, a few tracks and the remains of the camp. A Goli otok map poster works best with the neighbouring islands and the channel in frame. That places the island in the setting that made it so isolated, even though it lies within sight of the coast.
With almost no vegetation, the island shows on the map as a clean, empty shape, and its outline carries the whole composition.
The abandoned prison buildings sit near the shore, the only cluster of structures on an otherwise untouched surface.
The strait between the island and the mountains of the mainland frames the composition. It shows how close to the coast the island lies, yet how cut off it remained.

Koteā ko Goli otok
This is not a decorative map in the usual sense. It is chosen by descendants of former prisoners, by historians of Yugoslavia and by people who have visited the ruins and want to remember what they saw. The bare outline carries that history quietly.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, for example with dates or a family name. Noir and Paper suit the gravity of the subject, and Classic black & white, Blueprint and Sand are also available. HD files cost $9, and printed posters come on matte paper.
