Te mapa
Goulburn lies on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, between Sydney and Canberra. It was proclaimed Australia's first inland city in the nineteenth century, and its centre keeps a formal grid of wide streets from that era. The Wollondilly and Mulwaree rivers meet near the town, and their channels border it to the east and north.
The city grew as a centre for the region's wool industry, a history marked by the Big Merino, a large concrete sheep beside the old highway. Goulburn also has a number of grand Victorian buildings, including two cathedrals and a courthouse. The Hume Highway now bypasses the town and runs along its edge.
A Goulburn map poster shows the regular grid of the centre and the looser streets of the suburbs that grew out from it. The curves of the rivers provide contrast. The tablelands' open country surrounds the whole composition and gives it a clear, self-contained shape.
The centre is laid out in wide, straight streets at right angles. It is a formal pattern that makes the heart of the city easy to read.
The Wollondilly and Mulwaree rivers wind along the town's eastern and northern edges. Their curves soften the geometry of the grid.
The main route between Sydney and Melbourne sweeps past the town, a long line that marks one boundary of the urban area.

Koteā ko Goulburn
Goulburn means country childhoods, weekend stops on the drive to Sydney or Canberra and long family histories in the wool trade. A map of its grid and rivers keeps those memories on the wall.
