Guadalajara sits in Castilla-La Mancha on the left bank of the Henares River, northeast of Madrid. From above, the historic centre forms a compact cluster of irregular streets on raised ground above the valley. Around it, newer districts spread out in more regular blocks. The Henares runs in a wide green corridor to the west, and the A-2 motorway and railway follow the valley toward the capital.
The city's name comes from Arabic and is usually translated as river of stones or valley of stones. Its best-known monument is the Palacio del Infantado, a fifteenth-century palace of the Mendoza family with a richly decorated facade. Guadalajara has grown considerably in recent decades as part of the Henares corridor that links it with Madrid.
