Gulebage lies in the Yarkand oasis in southwestern Xinjiang, on the edge of the county town of Shache. Water from the mountains shapes this landscape, carried across flat land by canals and ditches. On a map the result is a patchwork of straight lanes, long field plots and clusters of houses. The desert is never far beyond them.
The Yarkand oasis was a stop on the southern Silk Road route around the Taklamakan Desert, and its settlement pattern reflects a long farming tradition. Roads tend to follow irrigation lines, so the grid comes less from planning and more from how water is shared. Lanes and channels run side by side, and the fields between them read as long, narrow rectangles.
