Hādīshahr lies in the far north of East Azerbaijan province, near Jolfa and the Aras River, which marks Iran's border here. From above, the town spreads over the valley floor in a fairly regular grid, while steep, dry mountains rise to the south. Orchards and fields fill the lower ground toward the river.
The town was formed by merging older settlements, which is why its layout combines village cores with newer planned streets. It sits in the corridor served by the Aras Free Zone around Jolfa, an area known for its dramatic gorge scenery and the historic churches scattered along the river nearby.
