Iğdır is on a low, fertile plain in the far east of Turkey, close to the borders with Armenia, Iran and Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave. Compared with the mountain towns of the region, the ground here is unusually level. From above, that shows as a fairly regular pattern of streets and blocks surrounded by fields and orchards.
The plain sits well below the surrounding highlands, which gives Iğdır a milder climate than much of eastern Anatolia and good conditions for growing apricots and cotton. Mount Ararat, the country's highest peak, rises to the south-west and dominates the skyline, although it lies beyond the town itself.
