Te mapa
Hang Dong lies just south-west of Chiang Mai, in the wide valley of the Ping River. The main road south toward Chom Thong runs through its centre. From above, the town is a strip of shops, temples and houses along that road, with smaller lanes branching off into fields and villages. To the west, the flat valley floor gives way to wooded hills.
The district is known for woodcarving and furniture making, especially around the village of Ban Tawai, where workshops and showrooms line the lanes. It has also become a residential area for Chiang Mai. Housing estates and gardens now fill much of the space between older villages and irrigated rice paddies.
A Hang Dong map poster shows a landscape in transition. The traditional valley pattern of canals, paddies and village clusters is gradually being crossed by newer roads and estates. In black and white these layers are easy to read: the straight highway, the irregular village lanes and the hills closing off the frame to the west.
The main highway south from Chiang Mai is the backbone of the district. It runs as a long straight line, with the densest part of the town gathered along it.
Irrigation channels and field boundaries divide the valley floor into small plots. They give the open areas of the map a fine, repeated texture typical of northern Thai farmland.
On the western side the roads thin out and the land rises into forested hills. This natural edge closes the composition and gives it a sense of enclosure.
