Te mapa
Bago, long known in English as Pegu, lies on the river of the same name northeast of Yangon. The land around it is flat and low. On a map, the Bago River winds through the town, and the main road and railway to Yangon cut across it. The town's streets fill the gaps between large religious compounds.
For centuries this was the capital of the Mon kingdom of Hanthawaddy, and those years are still visible in the town. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda has one of the tallest stupas in Myanmar. The Shwethalyaung, a huge reclining Buddha, lies a short distance to the west. Traces of the old palace grounds and moat still show in the layout.
A Bago map poster captures a town where sacred sites give structure to the everyday streets. Open spaces around the pagodas stand out among the smaller blocks, and the meandering river adds a soft curve through the plan. In black and white, the town appears as a patchwork of compounds, roads and water.
The pagoda's grounds form a distinct open area in the town plan. Its stupa is among the tallest in the country and is visible for kilometres.
The river winds through the town in loose curves. It adds the main natural line to an otherwise flat and even map.
The outline of the former Hanthawaddy palace area and its moat can still be read in the streets. It is a reminder of the town's time as a capital.
