Te mapa
Yangon lies on a tongue of land bounded by the Yangon River to the south, the Bago River to the east and the Hlaing River to the west. The downtown district along the southern waterfront is laid out in a tight grid planned by the British in the 1850s, with long parallel streets running north from the river and numbered cross streets between them.
Sule Pagoda sits at the centre of that grid as a traffic circle, an ancient pagoda that now works as a roundabout. North of downtown, the land rises to Singuttara Hill, where the Shwedagon Pagoda stands, and beyond it Kandawgyi Lake and the larger Inya Lake open up among greener, more spacious neighbourhoods.
Yangon was Myanmar's capital until the government moved to Naypyidaw in the mid-2000s, and it remains the country's largest city. The Yangon Circular Railway loops around the urban area. A Yangon map poster captures the contrast between the precise colonial grid by the river and the looser, lake-dotted districts further north.
A regular colonial street plan fills the southern waterfront, with numbered streets crossing long avenues in a pattern that reads clearly even at small scale.
The great gilded stupa stands on Singuttara Hill north of downtown, its terraced precinct forming a distinct shape surrounded by parkland.
The largest lake in the city spreads across the northern districts, an irregular body of water that anchors the upper part of the composition.

Koteā ko Yangon
Yangon is a city of strong personal ties, whether through family, work or a long stay. A map that holds both the river grid and the lakes to the north gives a sense of the whole place, not only its best-known sights.
