Hedong is in the hilly interior of eastern Guangdong, where towns tend to occupy the flat ground along rivers, with wooded ridges on either side. From above, the built-up area follows the valley floor. Main roads run parallel to the water, and smaller lanes branch off towards farmland and the foot of the hills.
