Te mapa
Higashikagawa stretches along the northeastern coast of Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku, facing the Seto Inland Sea. From above, the city forms a long band: small towns and fishing harbours along the shore, a railway and coastal road running parallel to the water, and forested hills rising inland toward the border with Tokushima.
The city was formed in 2003 by merging three towns, Hiketa, Shirotori and Ōchi, so its map has several distinct centres rather than one downtown. Higashikagawa is widely known as the heart of Japan's glove industry, producing the large majority of gloves made in the country, a trade that has shaped the area for more than a century.
A Higashikagawa map poster shows the coastline with its small harbours, the separate town centres strung along the shore and the quiet valleys running up into the hills. The meeting of sea, narrow coastal plain and mountains gives the composition a clear horizontal rhythm.
The shoreline runs the full length of the city, with small harbours and bays that give the map a detailed northern edge.
Hiketa, Shirotori and Ōchi each keep their own compact cluster of streets, strung along the coastal road and railway.
Forested slopes rise to the south, and narrow valleys with farmland and roads reach up into them from the coast.
