Te mapa
Takamatsu faces the islands of the Seto Inland Sea from the northern coast of Shikoku, and its map opens directly onto the water. The harbour and ferry piers sit at the top of the centre, next to the remains of Takamatsu Castle, whose moats were filled with seawater. From there, a regular grid of streets and covered shopping arcades extends south across the plain.
Further south lies Ritsurin Garden, one of Japan's most celebrated landscape gardens, its ponds and paths set against a wooded hill. To the east rises Yashima, a flat-topped plateau whose steep sides leave a distinctive blank outline in the street network. A Takamatsu map poster brings together the straight lines of port and grid, the islands offshore and the gentle curves of the garden.
Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa, Japan's smallest prefecture, and the main gateway to the art islands of Naoshima and Teshima, as well as to Shōdoshima. The region is famous for Sanuki udon, and the area has a long past: the Battle of Yashima, one of the key clashes of the twelfth-century Genpei War, was fought just east of the present city.
The castle grounds beside the harbour keep their seawater moats, forming neat rectangles of water right at the edge of the port.
A large garden of ponds, islands and pine-covered slopes south of the centre. On the poster its paths create a delicate, irregular pattern beside the grid.
The flat-topped hill east of the city is ringed by roads at its base, leaving a clear, rounded shape where streets cannot climb.
