Te mapa
Tsuyama lies in a basin in northern Okayama Prefecture, ringed by the low mountains of the Chūgoku range. The Yoshii River flows east to west across the basin. On the map, the city centre gathers on the river's north bank, where the grid of the former castle town fills the space between the water and the rising ground.
At the heart of it is the castle hill. Tsuyama Castle was built in the early seventeenth century. Its buildings are mostly gone, but the massive stone walls survive, stacked in terraces, and the site is now Kakuzan Park, famous for its cherry blossoms in spring. On a Tsuyama map poster the park reads as a compact green island in the centre of town.
East and west of the castle, older merchant districts stretch along the historic roads, their narrow lots still visible in the street pattern. Beyond them, suburbs and rice fields fill the basin floor until the slopes close in. The whole city sits in a bowl, clearly bounded by hills on every side.

The river runs across the basin from east to west, dividing the old centre from the southern districts and linking the town with the valley.
Historic districts on either side of the castle keep their long, narrow street frontages, a fine-grained pattern that contrasts with the newer suburbs.

Koteā ko Tsuyama
Tsuyama suits anyone who loves Japanese castle towns, or who knows this quiet corner of Okayama personally. The map shows a centuries-old plan, still readable around the castle hill, in a basin framed by mountains.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps a date from a spring visit, and decide whether to keep the coordinates line. Then pick a style: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
