Te mapa
Fukuyama sits at the eastern edge of Hiroshima Prefecture, where the plain of the Ashida River opens onto the Seto Inland Sea. From above, the city looks like a dense core around the railway station, fringed by low wooded hills to the north and a long, straight-edged coast that was built outward into the sea. The river crosses the western side before reaching its mouth.
The city grew around Fukuyama Castle, built in the early seventeenth century and rebuilt after the war. The castle stands right beside the station, so close that Shinkansen passengers can see it from the platform. On a map, the moat-lined castle grounds and the tracks sit side by side, which shows how the modern city was laid over the old castle town.
A Fukuyama map poster also takes in Tomonoura, the small harbour town at the southern tip of the municipality. Its tight lanes wrap around a curved bay, very different from the wide blocks and large coastal steelworks further north. Fukuyama calls itself the city of roses, and planted roses line many of its streets.
The castle hill and its grounds sit right next to Fukuyama Station. On the map, the old defensive layout and the modern rail corridor share one compact block at the centre of the city.
At the southern tip of the peninsula, the old port of Tomonoura curves around a small bay. Its lanes are so narrow they appear as fine threads next to the broad grid of the city proper.
South of the centre, the shore is made of straight-sided blocks of reclaimed land that hold heavy industry. From above it reads as a geometric edge pushed out into the Inland Sea.

Koteā ko Fukuyama
People hang a Fukuyama map because they grew up here, studied here or passed through on the way to Tomonoura. The castle next to the tracks makes a clear focal point, and the coastline gives the lower half of the print a strong, readable edge.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a neighbourhood or a year, and a coordinates line. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
