Te mapa
Niihama sits on the northern coast of Shikoku, where a narrow plain runs between the Seto Inland Sea and the mountains of the Ishizuchi range. The city grew around the Besshi copper mine, which the Sumitomo family ran for nearly three centuries. The map still carries traces of that history in its port, rail lines and factory districts.
Along the shore, large industrial sites and harbour basins give the coastline a squared, engineered edge, with piers and reclaimed land reaching into the sea. Behind them, residential streets fill the plain in a loose grid. Rivers cut through it on short, direct courses from the mountains to the coast.
To the south the ground rises sharply. The streets thin out into valley roads leading up toward the old mine sites, now partly preserved as a heritage park. A Niihama map poster frames this steep shift from sea to mountain, a compact geography that explains much of how the city developed and why industry settled here.
Harbour basins, piers and reclaimed plots line much of the coast, forming a hard, straight-edged boundary where the city meets the Seto Inland Sea.
The land climbs quickly to the south toward the Ishizuchi range, and on the map the dense street network stops abruptly where the slopes begin.
Each October, Niihama's Taiko Festival carries huge decorated drum floats through the neighbourhoods, and for a few days the ordinary residential streets on the map become procession routes.

Koteā ko Niihama
People remember Niihama through its festival, its mountains and the industry that shaped it. A map print lets former residents and families with roots here keep the whole coastal plain in view, from the harbour up to the foothills.
