Te mapa
Matsue, capital of Shimane Prefecture, is often called the City of Water, and the map shows why. The city sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Shinji to the west and the Nakaumi lagoon to the east. The Ōhashi River links the two and runs straight through the centre, and several bridges tie the northern and southern halves together.
North of the river, Matsue Castle stands on a low hill, surrounded by a network of moats that still outline the old castle town. The castle is one of Japan's few surviving original keeps and was named a National Treasure in 2015. The writer Lafcadio Hearn lived near its moat in the 1890s, and his former residence remains a well-known stop.
A Matsue map poster shows that balance of land and water: the broad lake edge, the river with its row of bridges, and the rectangular moats framing the castle grounds. The lakes leave large open areas on the page, which gives the design a calm, spacious feel.

Horikawa moats wrap around the castle hill in angular channels, tracing the plan of the Edo-period castle town.
The short river between the lake and the lagoon divides the city in two and is crossed by a series of bridges.

Koteā ko Matsue
Matsue rewards slow travel: boat rides on the moats, evenings by the lake, the walk up to the castle. A map brings back the whole route at a glance and suits a quiet room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the date of a trip. Then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
