Te mapa
Hatsukaichi lies on the western side of Hiroshima Bay, along the Seto Inland Sea. From above, the city forms a narrow strip of built-up land between the coast and the forested hills behind it, with railway lines and roads running parallel to the shore. Reclaimed land juts into the bay, and the municipal area reaches far inland into the mountains.
The city includes the island of Miyajima, officially Itsukushima, home to Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its great torii gate that seems to stand in the sea at high tide. Ferries connect the island to the mainland at Miyajimaguchi, one of the most visited spots in the region.
A Hatsukaichi map poster shows a city defined by the meeting of mountain and sea. The coastline forms a strong horizontal line, the streets press between water and slopes, and the island sits offshore as a dark, forested shape. In black and white, this layered composition of coast, city and island is striking and easy to read.
The mountainous island lies just offshore, with Itsukushima Shrine and its torii gate on its northern shore facing the mainland.
The built-up area forms a narrow band along the bay, squeezed between the water and wooded hills, with rail and roads running parallel.
Areas of reclaimed land extend into Hiroshima Bay, their straight edges contrasting with the natural curves of the island opposite.
