Te mapa
Hōfu lies on the southern coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. The city fills a coastal plain between wooded hills to the north and reclaimed land, harbours and industrial piers along the shore. The Saba River runs across the plain to the sea, and it forms one of the main lines on the map.
The name reflects the city's past as the provincial capital of Suō. Hōfu Tenmangū, one of the oldest shrines dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, stands at the foot of the hills, where the older town grew along roads leading to it. Toward the coast the street pattern becomes more open and more regular.
A Hōfu map poster shows the range of the city in one frame: shrine district and hills in the north, residential grids in the middle, and straight-edged port and industrial land where the plain meets the Inland Sea. That includes a large automobile plant on the reclaimed shore.
The shrine and its approach mark the historic core at the base of the northern hills, where the old town took shape.
The river crosses the coastal plain to the sea, a clear line cutting through the city's neighbourhoods.
Along the Inland Sea, straight-edged industrial land and harbour basins give the coast a geometric, man-made outline.

Hōfu is personal for people from Yamaguchi, for pilgrims to the Tenmangū and for those who worked on the coast. The poster keeps shrine, river and sea in one calm composition.
