Te mapa
Huehuetenango lies in the western highlands of Guatemala, in a valley below the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. From above, the city has a classic colonial layout. A regular grid of streets surrounds the central park and main church, and newer neighbourhoods spread out along the valley and up the lower slopes.
Just outside the city are the ruins of Zaculeu, a Postclassic Maya site that was the capital of the Mam people. Its plazas and temple platforms appear as a small, distinct shape on the map. The Pan-American Highway passes nearby on its way to Mexico, and the high country around the city produces some of Guatemala's best-known coffee.
A Huehuetenango map poster brings the city's setting into focus. The orderly grid of the centre, the winding roads that climb into the mountains, and the folded terrain all around make a rich but balanced composition. In monochrome the ravines and ridges add depth, so the city looks exactly as it is: a busy valley under a great mountain wall.
The ruins of the former Mam capital lie just west of the city. Its plazas and platforms form a compact geometric shape on the edge of the map.
The historic centre is a regular grid around the central park. It is the most orderly area of the city and the natural focal point of the poster.
Mountains rise steeply to the north of the city. Roads zigzag up into them, and the poster shows ridges and ravines surrounding the valley.
