Te mapa
Quetzaltenango, widely known as Xela, sits in a broad valley in Guatemala's western highlands, at an altitude of more than 2,300 metres. The colonial grid fills the valley floor and gradually loosens as it reaches the surrounding slopes. Volcanoes and ridges close in the view on most sides, with Santa María the most prominent.
It is Guatemala's second-largest city and the centre of the K'iche'-speaking highlands. Around Parque Centroamérica, the main square, stands a group of neoclassical stone buildings. They were largely built during the coffee boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The city is also known for its many Spanish-language schools.
A Quetzaltenango map poster shows a colonial plan laid out in a mountain basin. The square blocks around the central park give way to irregular streets on the edges, and roads leave for the surrounding towns. The mountain setting cannot be drawn directly in line, but you can feel it in the way the city fits its valley.

The city fills a high, relatively flat valley. The grid gives way to irregular streets as the ground rises toward the ridges around it.
Santa María and other volcanic peaks overlook the valley. They set the limits of the city and give it one of the most striking settings in Central America.

Koteā ko Quetzaltenango
Many people come to Xela to study Spanish, volunteer or travel through the highlands, and the city often stays with them. A map of its streets is a thoughtful reminder of time spent here, or of a family home.
Personalise the title, perhaps with Xela, along with a subtitle and the coordinates of a school or house. Then choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
