Te mapa
Ibusuki sits at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, where the peninsula meets the mouth of Kagoshima Bay. Its map is framed by water on the east, where the town follows the curve of the bay shore in a long ribbon of streets.
Inland the landscape is volcanic. Lake Ikeda, a large, nearly circular caldera lake, lies to the west, and beyond it rises the symmetrical cone of Mount Kaimon, often called Satsuma Fuji. Together they give the wider map strong, simple shapes that stand out against the surrounding farmland.
The town is best known for its sand baths, where visitors are buried in naturally heated sand on the beach, a practice made possible by the geothermal activity beneath the coast. A Ibusuki map poster shows a place where shoreline, crater lake and volcano all fit into a single frame.
The town stretches along the shore of Kagoshima Bay, where the heated beaches used for the famous sand baths lie close to the streets.
West of town the round caldera of Lake Ikeda forms a bold, clean shape, the largest lake on Kyushu and easy to spot from above.
The near-perfect cone of Mount Kaimon rises at the peninsula's edge, its contour lines and slopes anchoring the south-western corner of a wider map.
