Te mapa
Imi-n-Tanout lies in Marrakesh-Safi, southwest of Marrakesh, where the plains meet the western foothills of the High Atlas. The town grew along the old route over the mountains toward Agadir, and that road is still the clearest line on the map, running through the centre.
Houses and streets cluster along and behind the main road, with a market area and administrative quarter in the core. Around the town the ground rises toward the mountains in the south, and dry riverbeds and farmland shape the edges. It is largely a Tashelhit-speaking area, serving the surrounding villages.
An Imi-n-Tanout map poster shows a town defined by its crossing point: one long road, a dense cluster of lanes and the first folds of the Atlas behind them. It is a good example of how settlements in this part of Morocco grew at the meeting point of plain, mountain and trade route.
The route between Marrakesh and Agadir runs through town, and on the map it forms a strong central axis around which the rest of the streets are organised.
Around the main road the streets tighten into a compact centre of short lanes and small blocks, the busiest part of a town that serves a wide rural area.
South of town the land climbs toward the High Atlas, and roads and tracks start to curve with the terrain as they head into the mountains.
