Imishli lies in the south of Azerbaijan on the wide Kura-Aras lowland, not far from the Aras River that forms part of the border with Iran. The land here is very flat, and that flatness shapes the map. Streets run in long, straight lines, the town spreads evenly rather than climbing or bending, and the fields around it are divided into regular strips and blocks.
Agriculture defines the surrounding district, and irrigation is what makes it possible on this dry plain. From above, canals and ditches appear as fine, disciplined lines cutting across the countryside, often running parallel to roads. The pattern gives the outskirts a measured, almost ruled quality that is quite different from the more irregular streets of older mountain towns elsewhere in the country.
