Inaruwa is the headquarters of Sunsari District in eastern Nepal, on the flat plains of the Terai. From above the town is a loose pattern of streets and houses surrounded by rice fields, with roads leading north towards the East-West Highway and south towards the border with India. The land is almost entirely flat, crossed by small streams and irrigation channels.
To the west lies the wide floodplain of the Koshi, Nepal's largest river system, and the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve protects part of its wetlands and grasslands. The area is agricultural, and Inaruwa serves as an administrative and market centre for the district.
