Irákleion, also known as Heraklion, is the largest city on Crete and the island's administrative capital. It faces the Aegean on Crete's north coast. On a map, the most striking feature is the outline of the Venetian fortifications: a huge ring of walls with angular bastions that still encloses the old city, even though the modern city has grown well beyond it.
Inside the walls, the streets form an irregular web that runs toward a few central squares, including the area around the Morosini fountain. Down at the harbour, the Koules fortress guards the entrance to the old port with a long breakwater running out beside it. Outside the walls, newer districts spread along the coast and up the gentle slopes to the south.
An Irákleion map poster shows a city where history is literally drawn into the plan. The writer Nikos Kazantzakis is buried on the Martinengo bastion. A few kilometres south lies Knossos, the Minoan palace site that makes the city a starting point for many journeys into Crete's past.

The Venetian sea fortress sits at the entrance of the old port, and a long breakwater draws a strong line out into the Aegean.
A route runs south from the walls toward the Minoan palace site, connecting the modern city to its much older neighbour.

Koteā ko Irákleion
Irákleion means summers on Crete, family roots or a long connection to the island's archaeology. Its star-shaped walls make an unusually graphic poster, one that holds up well both up close and from across the room.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for instance with a Greek name or an anniversary. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
