Te mapa
‘Irbīn lies in Eastern Ghouta, the agricultural belt on the eastern side of Damascus, a few kilometres from the centre of the capital. On the map it forms a dense cluster of streets and closely built blocks. It is so closely connected with neighbouring towns that the boundaries between settlements are often hard to see from above.
For generations the Ghouta was known for its orchards and gardens, watered by channels drawn from the Barada river system, and fields still separate some of the towns. ‘Irbīn was heavily affected by the Syrian war, and many families were displaced. Rebuilding and return have been gradual, and the town remains an important part of the Damascus countryside.
An ‘Irbīn map poster shows the town as it is laid out today, with a knot of narrow lanes at its centre, main roads linking it with Damascus and neighbouring towns, and patches of farmland at the edges. For people with roots here, it is a quiet way to keep the streets of home close, wherever they now live.
The core of ‘Irbīn is a tight weave of narrow lanes and small blocks. It is the most intricate part of the poster and the heart of the town.
The orchards and fields that remain around the town appear as open, finely divided plots, a reminder of the gardens Eastern Ghouta was long known for.
Main roads connect ‘Irbīn with the capital and neighbouring towns. They cut through the dense suburban fabric and give the map its structure.
