Te mapa
Ishiki, usually written Isshiki, lies on the northern shore of Mikawa Bay in Aichi Prefecture. Since 2011 it has been part of the city of Nishio. The land is low and flat, much of it reclaimed from the bay. From above it forms a very regular pattern of rectangular ponds, fields and straight drainage channels between the villages and the sea.
Many of those ponds are for eels. Isshiki has been one of Japan's best-known unagi farming areas for decades. The town is also known for the Isshiki Ōchōchin festival at Suwa Shrine, when giant paper lanterns several storeys tall are raised in late summer.
An Ishiki map poster shows the geometry of the aquaculture landscape. The pond pattern forms a dense grid of rectangles, broken by roads and waterways, with the bay coast as a clean edge. It is a map that looks almost abstract. It suits people from the area and anyone who knows its farming and festival traditions.
Rows of rectangular ponds cover much of the low ground, forming a grid that makes this area immediately recognisable from above.
The coastline and reclaimed land meet the bay along straight embankments, giving the map a firm, man-made edge on the water.
Straight channels divide fields and ponds, carrying water through the flat landscape and strengthening the geometric layout of the print.

Koteā ko Ishiki
For people from Isshiki, the pond grid and the bay are unmistakable, and the map makes a good reminder of home or of a family business. Its almost abstract pattern also appeals to lovers of graphic design.
You can edit the title and subtitle, including Japanese text, add a date and change the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint emphasises the precise geometry of the ponds.
