Te mapa
Istres lies on the north-western shore of the Étang de Berre, the large saltwater lagoon north-west of Marseille. The old town sits on a rise above the water, and just north of it lies the smaller, almost circular Étang de l'Olivier. On a map the two lagoons frame the town, one wide and open, the other compact and enclosed.
Beyond the centre, residential districts spread across the gentle slopes, and to the north-west the land opens onto the stony plain of the Crau. The most striking man-made shape is the Istres-Le Tubé air base, which has one of the longest runways in Europe. An Istres map poster sets that long straight line against curving lagoon shores.
Istres has long been associated with French aviation. Its air base is used for test flights and military operations, and it served as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle programme. The town itself remains typically Provençal, with narrow lanes in the old centre, plane trees, and summer life focused on the lagoon shores.
The small, rounded lagoon beside the old town is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map, a near-perfect loop of shoreline with the town wrapped along its edge.
The large lagoon fills a broad part of the frame to the south-east, and its long coastline gives the composition a calm, open side.
The runway of the air base draws a long, straight line across the flat land beyond the town, the boldest single stroke in the poster.

Koteā ko Istres
Istres is a map for those who served or worked at the air base, for families who grew up by the lagoons, and for anyone who loves the quieter, less-painted side of Provence.
Add a title, a subtitle with a posting date or a squadron name, and the coordinates line. Blueprint suits the aviation connection, while Paper and Sand bring out the Provençal light. Classic black & white and Noir are also available.
