Itaíba is a municipality of around 34,000 people in the interior of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid part of northeastern Brazil. Much of the population lives in rural areas across the municipality, and the town itself is the local service and market centre.
On a map, the town is a small, fairly orderly grid of streets, with a central square area and blocks running out from it. Past the last streets, roads and tracks head off into open country, where farms and scattered communities are linked by long unpaved routes. The contrast between the neat town and the wide land around it is the main feature.

Several routes leave the town and stretch into the countryside. They connect outlying rural communities and cross the white field of the print in long lines.
