Itaporanga lies in the interior of Paraíba, in the Piancó valley region of the sertão. The town is laid out on relatively gentle ground, with a regular grid of streets around its main square and church, and the built-up area thins quickly into farmland and caatinga, the dry thorn scrub typical of north-eastern Brazil. Seasonal watercourses cross the landscape and swell only during the rainy months.
The name comes from Tupi and is usually translated as beautiful stone, a reference to the rocky ground of the region. Like many sertão towns, Itaporanga serves as a market and service centre for a wide rural area, and its roads extend outward to neighbouring municipalities across a sparsely populated landscape.
