Te mapa
Itaqui is in the far west of Rio Grande do Sul, on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River, which marks the border with Argentina. The Argentine town of Alvear is on the opposite bank. On a map, the river is the defining element: a wide band of water running along the western edge of the town.
The town itself is laid out on a regular grid of long, straight streets running back from the river. The old centre is close to the waterfront. Beyond the urban area, the land opens out onto the flat pampa of the Fronteira Oeste, where large rice paddies and cattle ranches dominate. The irrigation channels of the rice fields add fine, straight lines to the landscape.
An Itaqui map poster shows a border town in a very clear form. It has a single river, a neat grid and a wide, flat landscape around it. The broad water on one side and the ordered blocks next to it make a strong, balanced composition.
The broad river runs along the western side of the town and forms the international border. Argentina lies on the far bank, directly opposite Itaqui.
The streets form long, regular blocks that run back from the waterfront. The historic centre sits closest to the river, where the town was first established.
The flat land around Itaqui is used for irrigated rice. Large paddies and straight channels cover the plain beyond the town in a regular pattern.

The poster suits people from the Fronteira Oeste, families with ties on both sides of the river, and anyone who remembers summers by the Uruguay. A border town has a special kind of identity, and this map expresses it clearly.
