Te mapa
Izmayil stands on the northern bank of the Kiliya branch of the Danube, in the southwest of Ukraine's Odesa region, directly across the river from Romania. It is one of Ukraine's main Danube ports. From above, the city has a clear, rectilinear plan with long parallel streets running back from the river, a nineteenth-century layout that still defines its centre.
The Danube is the defining feature of the map. Wide and slow here, it forms the city's southern edge, with islands and wetlands on the opposite side. Port facilities line the bank. West of the centre, the site of the old Izmail fortress remains, famous for being captured by Russian forces under Alexander Suvorov in 1790, an event still commemorated in the city.
An Izmayil map poster combines two very different forms: the orderly grid of the city and the broad, uneven river with its delta landscape. For people from Izmayil and the Bessarabian region, now spread widely, it offers a precise and dignified view of home on the Danube.
The Danube's northern branch forms the city's southern edge, a wide river line with islands and wetland beyond it that fills the lower part of the map.
Long parallel streets lead inland from the river, crossed at right angles, forming the city's clear and regular nineteenth-century plan.
West of the centre, the site of the old fortress is marked by its earthworks and open ground, a historic space set apart from the urban grid.
