Te mapa
Jackson lies roughly halfway between Memphis and Nashville, and on a map it looks like a crossroads. Interstate 40 passes along its northern side, several highways converge on the centre, and railway lines cut across the city in different directions. The Forked Deer River runs to the south, bordered by low, wooded ground.
Downtown keeps a traditional grid of blocks around the county courthouse, the seat of Madison County. Outside it, older neighbourhoods give way to wider suburban streets, commercial strips and campuses, including Union University, which lies on the city's north side.
A Jackson map poster also reflects the city's long railroad history. It was home to Casey Jones, the locomotive engineer whose 1900 crash became the subject of a famous ballad, and his house is now a railroad museum. On a black-and-white print, the lines of track and road give the city a clear, connected shape.

The historic centre follows a regular grid of blocks around the Madison County courthouse, distinct from the looser suburban streets outside it.
The river runs along the south of the city through low wooded ground, adding a natural winding line to the map.
