Jadugora lies in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, in hilly, forested country southeast of Jamshedpur. The town is known across India as the site of the country's first uranium mine, which began operating in 1967 and is run by the Uranium Corporation of India. The mine and its facilities shape much of the local map.
Around the industrial area, housing colonies for workers are laid out in regular rows, a planned pattern that differs clearly from the more organic villages nearby. Roads wind between the hills, connecting the town with other mining sites in the area and with Jamshedpur.
The surrounding landscape is one of low hills, forest and small fields, crossed by streams. A Jadugora map poster shows a distinctive combination: an industrial settlement with ordered colony streets, set in green, rolling country far from any large city.
