Jalolquduq lies in Uzbekistan's Andijan Region, in the eastern part of the Fergana Valley. This is one of Central Asia's most densely farmed landscapes. On the map, the town has a fairly regular street layout, and the land around it is divided by irrigation canals into long strips of cotton, grain and orchard.
Water decides everything here. Channels drawn from the valley's rivers run across the plain, and field edges, roads and village lines often follow them. The result is a patchwork that looks almost engineered from above. Mountains rise on the valley's rim, beyond the frame of a town-scale map.
