Jalor sits in southwestern Rajasthan at the base of a steep granite hill crowned by Jalore Fort. From above, the fort's walls trace the top of the hill, and the old town fills the ground below in a dense tangle of lanes. Newer roads and neighbourhoods extend outwards onto the surrounding plain.
The fort is one of the region's best-known historic strongholds, and its long walls and gates were built to follow the hill's rugged outline. In more recent times the district has become known for granite quarrying and stonework, and the stone that shaped the fort now also supports a large local industry.
