Jāmkhed is a town in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district, formerly Ahmednagar, on the dry Deccan plateau. From above it forms a compact centre of close-packed streets, with a looser fringe of newer housing along the main roads. The countryside around it is open and gently rolling, divided into fields and crossed by seasonal streams that run full only after the monsoon.
In public health circles the town is known around the world for the Comprehensive Rural Health Project, founded here in 1970 by the doctors Raj and Mabelle Arole. Its model of training village health workers from local communities was studied and adopted far beyond India. Nearby Kharda was the site of the 1795 battle between the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad.
