Te mapa
Jammu lies where the plains of Punjab meet the first ridges of the Shivalik hills, and its map shows that meeting clearly. The Tawi River runs through the city, separating the older town on the higher northern bank from newer districts across the water. Bridges link the two halves, and the terrain gives many streets a winding, uneven course.
The old city sits on raised ground above the river, with dense lanes around temples, markets and the former Dogra palaces of Mubarak Mandi. Across the Tawi, Bahu Fort looks over the water from a ridge. Jammu is often called the City of Temples, and shrines are scattered through its neighbourhoods, from small roadside structures to the Raghunath Temple complex.
For much of the past century Jammu was the winter capital of the region, with the administration moving here from Srinagar each year. A Jammu map poster captures a city shaped by river and slope. The dense old core, the bridges over the Tawi and the newer planned colonies to the south come together in a varied composition.
The river cuts diagonally through the city. Its wide bed and bridges are the main natural feature of the map and separate the old town from the newer districts.
On the northern bank, the historic centre occupies higher ground, with narrow, irregular lanes clustered around temples, bazaars and the palace complex.
On the opposite bank, the fort sits on a ridge above the river, and the roads around it bend with the rising terrain.
