Te mapa
Jerada lies in Morocco's Oriental region, on a high, dry plateau not far from the Algerian border. From above, the town is a spread of streets across uneven hilly ground, with neighbourhoods separated by open land. The terrain is bare and rocky, and the landscape around the town is marked by old mining sites and spoil heaps.
Jerada was built around coal. For decades it was Morocco's main coal-mining centre, and the town grew to house the miners and their families. The official mine closed around the end of the 1990s, which hit the local economy hard. The town's story since then has been about finding a way forward after the industry that created it ended.
A Jerada map poster shows a place whose layout reflects its history. The neighbourhoods are scattered across hills, the roads link them to the old mining areas, and there is a lot of open ground in between. It is a spare, honest composition, and in black and white it has the quality of a documentary photograph.
The town's districts spread over uneven, rolling ground, with open land between them, giving the poster a scattered, fragmented outline.
Around the town, former mining sites and spoil heaps mark the plateau, a reminder of the coal industry that shaped the settlement.
The dry, open plateau surrounds the town on all sides. On the map it appears as wide, quiet space around the built-up areas.
