Te mapa
Kaédi is the capital of the Gorgol region in southern Mauritania, set on the north bank of the Senegal River where it forms the border with Senegal. The river and its wide floodplain define the map: a broad band of water, channels and seasonally flooded land to the south, and a compact town of low houses and sandy streets on the higher ground.
The Gorgol River joins the Senegal close to the town, and the land around the confluence is used for flood-recession farming and irrigated fields. Streets in Kaédi form a loose, low-density grid, with the market area and administrative buildings near the centre and quieter neighbourhoods spreading toward the dry country to the north.
A Kaédi map poster records a place shaped by a great river in a dry landscape. The town is also known among architects for its regional hospital, built in the 1980s with brick domes and vaults, which received an Aga Khan Award for Architecture. On the map, though, it is the meeting of water and sand that holds the eye.
The river runs along the southern edge of town, with branching channels and floodplain on both sides, giving the poster its strongest and most fluid lines.
Near Kaédi the Gorgol River meets the Senegal, and the fields and channels around this junction create a distinctive, delicate pattern across the flat land.
The town's sandy streets form a loose, open grid, lighter than a European city plan and clearly contrasting with the organic shapes of the river valley.

Koteā ko Kaédi
Kaédi is a home and a meeting point for families spread between Mauritania, Senegal and further abroad. A map of the town on the river keeps that geography present, and its sparse, graphic look suits modern interiors as well as it suits a family living room.
