Te mapa
Nouakchott is a young capital. It was chosen shortly before Mauritania became independent in 1960 and was built on what had been a small coastal village. The map reflects that recent origin. A broad, orderly grid of avenues forms the centre, and the city then spreads outward in large, loosely filled districts across flat, sandy ground between the ocean and the desert.
To the west, the Atlantic coastline runs in an almost perfectly straight line, with no bay or estuary to interrupt it. The fishing beach, where brightly painted pirogues come ashore each day, is one of the city's best-known scenes. On a Nouakchott map poster the coast acts as a clean edge, and the streets fade out to the east where the dunes begin.
The deep-water Port of Friendship lies south of the centre. The city grew very quickly after the droughts of the 1970s and 1980s, when many people moved to the capital. That rapid growth shows in the plan: central districts are laid out as rectangles, while the outer districts form wide, open grids with plenty of empty space.
The long, straight coast forms the western boundary. A strip of beach and dune separates the city from the ocean.
The core, laid out around independence, is built on wide perpendicular avenues. It is the most regular part of the map.
To the east and north the street network thins into sand. The city's boundary with the Sahara is gradual and clearly visible from above.

Koteā ko Nouakchott
Nouakchott has a simple, open outline defined by the ocean and the desert. It makes a spare, well-balanced poster, and it means a lot to Mauritanians at home and abroad.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line, in any language you prefer, and choose from five styles. Sand suits the city's setting well. HD files in six sizes cost $9, and a free watermarked preview is available first.
