Te mapa
Rufisque lies on the southern coast of the Cap-Vert peninsula, east of central Dakar and now part of its growing metropolitan area. The map is shaped by a long, gently curving shoreline, with the old town pressed close to the beach and newer districts spreading inland and along the roads and rail line that link Dakar with the rest of Senegal.
In the colonial period Rufisque was a major port for the peanut trade and one of the Four Communes, whose residents held French citizenship rights, alongside Saint-Louis, Gorée and Dakar. Traces of that era survive in the older streets near the waterfront, where warehouses and trading houses once lined the shore.
Today the coastline is under pressure from erosion, and the town is changing quickly as Dakar expands toward it. A Rufisque map poster records that edge between land and ocean at a particular moment, with the dense older quarter, the long roads heading east and the open Atlantic filling the lower part of the frame.
A long, smooth curve of beach forms the southern edge of the town, with fishing districts and older neighbourhoods set close to the water.
The historic core keeps a compact street pattern from its days as a trading port, when merchants shipped peanuts from the region to Europe.
Main roads and the railway run through Rufisque toward Dakar and the interior, drawing strong parallel lines across the northern part of the map.
