Te mapa
Thiès sits on a low plateau about seventy kilometres east of Dakar, where the main routes into the Senegalese interior branch off. Its growth came with the railway. From above, the centre shows a colonial-era grid of regular blocks, with the long rail corridor and yard as its main feature. Newer neighbourhoods spread out from there in looser patterns.
The railway workshops made Thiès an industrial town, and in 1947–48 railway workers here took part in a long strike on the Dakar–Niger line. Ousmane Sembène later made it the subject of his novel God's Bits of Wood. A Thiès map poster traces the streets where much of that story took place.
The city is also known for its tapestry workshops, where artists weave large wall hangings based on painted designs. Both the workshops and the rail yards connect Thiès to work done with the hands. On the map, the heavy lines of the tracks sit beside the finer lines of residential lanes.
The railway lines and yard cut through the city as its strongest feature, a long band that organises the streets on either side.
The older centre follows regular rectangular blocks near the station, which read clearly against the more irregular districts beyond them.
Main roads leave the city toward Dakar, the coast and the interior. They mark Thiès as a junction on the plateau.

Koteā ko Thiès
For people from Thiès living in Dakar or abroad, and for anyone connected to its railway past, a street map is a quiet way to bring the city home. It suits a study, a family room or a gift for a relative who has left.
Set your own title and subtitle, perhaps a family name or a year, and use the coordinates line for a house or a quarter. Five styles are available: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand bring out the warmth of the plateau.
