Te mapa
Pikine is located in the Dakar region, east of the city centre on the Cap-Vert peninsula. It was created in the early 1950s to rehouse residents moved from central Dakar and has grown into one of Senegal's largest urban areas in its own right. On the map it appears as a dense field of small blocks with few large open spaces.
Some of the older areas follow planned grids, while later neighbourhoods grew more informally and have less regular street patterns. A Pikine map poster shows both. It also shows the Niayes, low-lying areas between the dunes where groundwater comes close to the surface. Some are cultivated as market gardens, and some remain wetlands or open water depending on the season.
The main roads and the motorway between central Dakar and the interior pass through or beside Pikine and form its strongest lines. The Atlantic coast lies to the north. Pikine is sometimes overlooked in favour of central Dakar, but for many people it is home, and its closely packed streets form a very distinctive map.
Small blocks and narrow streets cover most of the area. They create a fine, even texture that stands out in black and white.
Low-lying depressions between the dunes hold market gardens and seasonal water. They appear as irregular open areas within the dense network of streets.
Main routes and the motorway toward the interior pass along Pikine. Their long straight lines cut across the peninsula and link it to central Dakar.
