Te mapa
Kakuma is in Turkana County in the north-west of Kenya, on a hot, semi-arid plain. The name is known far beyond the region because of the Kakuma refugee camp, opened in 1992. It became home to people from South Sudan, Somalia and many other countries. The town and the camp sit side by side, and together they form one of the largest settlements in this part of Kenya.
From above, the pattern is unusual. Parts of the settlement are laid out in regular blocks and numbered zones, while the older town grows more loosely around the main road. Seasonal riverbeds, dry for much of the year, wind across the plain and split the built area into distinct pieces. The main road passes through and links Kakuma to the wider region.
A Kakuma map poster gives road, block and riverbed the same neutral line weight, at whatever scale you choose. For people who lived, worked or were born here, it can be a way to hold on to a place that shaped their lives, drawn simply and without decoration.
Wide sandy channels cross the plain and fill only after rain. On the map they read as pale, winding bands that break the settlement into separate areas.
Parts of the settlement follow a regular layout of blocks and zones. This gives a gridded texture that contrasts with the looser growth of the older town.
The main road through Kakuma links it with Lodwar to the south-east and Lokichogio to the north-west. It draws a long line across otherwise open country.
