Te mapa
Kalabo is the main town of its district in Zambia's Western Province, on the western side of the Barotse floodplain of the Zambezi. On a map, the town is a modest cluster of streets on higher ground, with the floodplain stretching out to the east. Each year the plain floods in the rainy season, and the shapes of channels and pools change with the water.
Kalabo is the gateway to Liuwa Plain National Park, known for one of the largest wildebeest migrations in Africa. The Luanginga River runs past the town, and many routes in the area follow the channels and raised ground rather than straight lines.
A Kalabo map poster shows a settlement defined by landscape. The town is small and compact, while the river and floodplain draw long, braided lines across the rest of the sheet. It is a rare map in which the water is the subject and the streets are the detail, which makes it striking in simple black and white.
East of town the vast floodplain of the Zambezi spreads out, flooding seasonally and leaving a pattern of channels and open grassland.
The Luanginga runs past Kalabo, a winding line that links the town to the floodplain and the wider river system.
Kalabo is the starting point for trips into Liuwa Plain National Park, the grassland known for its large wildebeest migration.
