Te mapa
Kalgoorlie grew almost overnight after Paddy Hannan found gold here in 1893, and its map still reflects a boom town. The streets form a generous grid, with Hannan Street in the centre wide enough, as local lore has it, to turn a camel train. Together with neighbouring Boulder, it forms the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
On the eastern side of town lies the defining feature of the area: the Fimiston open pit, known as the Super Pit, one of the largest open-cut gold mines in Australia. From above it is an enormous stepped crater, surrounded by waste dumps and haul roads, directly beside residential streets.
Water was a problem from the beginning, solved by the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, a pipeline of more than 500 kilometres from near Perth completed in 1903. A Kalgoorlie map poster shows the grid, the pit and the dry land around it in striking contrast.
The open-cut gold mine lies just east of town, a huge terraced void with spiralling haul roads that appears on the map as a dramatic cut-out shape.
The main street, named after the prospector who found gold here, runs as a broad axis through the grid and holds much of the town's historic architecture.
Kalgoorlie and Boulder sit side by side as two grids joined by roads and mine leases, which makes the map read as a double settlement in the desert.

Koteā ko Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie draws people who have worked on the mines, grown up in the Goldfields or passed through on a long road trip. Its map is unusual, a neat grid beside an enormous open pit, and it looks strong on any wall.
Choose a style such as Noir or Sand, which suits the desert setting, and add your own title, subtitle and coordinates. HD files are $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries, including Australia.
