Te mapa
Rottnest Island lies off the coast of Western Australia, a short ferry ride from Fremantle and Perth. From above it is long and uneven, with a wider eastern end and a narrow tail stretching west. The coastline is a chain of small bays, reefs and limestone points, and the interior is dominated by a group of pale salt lakes that take up a surprising share of the island's centre.
Most visitors arrive at Thomson Bay on the eastern end, where the main settlement, shops and accommodation are clustered. From there a quiet sealed road loops around the island, used mainly by cyclists and a bus, since private cars are largely not allowed. The Noongar name for the island is Wadjemup.
The European name comes from the Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh, who in 1696 took the island's quokkas for large rats and called it a rat's nest. A Rottnest Island map poster shows the looping road, the salt lakes in the middle and the scalloped bays around the edge, all compact enough to read at a glance.

A single road circles the island and links its bays. Travelled mostly by bicycle, it reads on the map as a clear line tracing the coast.
The main settlement sits on the sheltered eastern shore, where the ferries land. It is the one dense cluster of streets on an otherwise open island.

Koteā ko Rottnest Island
For many people in Perth, Rottnest is a place of school camps, summer holidays and long bike rides between beaches. A map of the island holds those memories in a single, familiar outline that is easy to recognise on the wall.
Set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a favourite bay or the year of a first visit, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand is a natural fit for the island's limestone coast.
